Custom packaging advice and expertise

Choosing the right packaging involves more than just shape and content. We can advise you regarding:

  • Selection of materials:: tin or plastic, and tin with the proper internal and external coatings
  • Legislation and regulations:: packaging that complies with ADR, UN certification and other industry requirements
  • Specifications and applications:: to suit the contents, processing and transport

Our specialists can help you find the right solution, whether you’re launching a new product line or looking to expand or optimise an existing one.

Always the right packaging: tin and plastic

Complete range

Our range consists of many types of tin and plastic packaging in various sizes, shapes and designs. These include round paint tins, rectangular cans, conical tins, UN-approved packaging and specially coated variants for corrosive substances. We also offer a wide range of closures.

Choose high quality

Quality control

As well as providing advice and verifying specifications, we carry out the necessary quality checks. We test the tin packaging for all relevant quality aspects, such as durability, transport performance and leak-tightness. This ensures that your packaging performs as it should, from production right to the end user.

Hildering TestLab

At the Hildering TestLab, all our packaging is tested for relevant quality aspects. We check whether the products meet the specified requirements and comply with environmental regulations.

The tests we carry out are:

  • Resistance test: is the chosen packaging suitable for containing the product?
  • Corrosion test: for example, the product in combination with an internal coating.
  • Migration test: does the product remain in the packaging or does it evaporate? This can take several months.
  • Leak test: is the filling too volatile for a particular packaging? This test is carried out in a container of water. An air hose is attached to the sealed packaging, the packaging is submerged in water, and the pressure (in bar) at which leakage (air bubbles) occurs is then recorded. An airtightness test is also carried out by pumping air into the packaging.
  • Determining the release value of a package is an important test; this value is measured by pumping air into a sealed package and then determining at what pressure the lid of the package ‘comes off’.
  • Drop tests: there are specific ‘drop test requirements’ for UN test reports. For example, under UN test Y1.2, the packaging, including its contents, must be able to fall from a height of 1.20 metres without opening. The drop tests are carried out in accordance with UN regulations using a number of prescribed methods. The tests involve dropping the packaging onto a steel plate filled with water (for liquids) or sand (for solid contents).
  • User testing: what happens when a package is opened and then closed again? Is this easy to do? Is the package still sealed afterwards? What happens to the package in a mixing machine?

As well as testing packaging, our innovative products are, of course, developed and tested at the Hildering test lab. Our test lab is an essential part of our business operations.
